Decision 2024
Monday night, Nevada player of the year Xavion Staton (6’10” Las Vegas, NV, Sierra Vista) chose blue and decided to commit to BYU. Some believe Staton is the best high school shot blocker in the country. In some ways, BYU was lucky to be considered, the Cougars offered July 11th, and Staton announced his final six options two weeks later on July 23rd. We don’t know what type of relationship the staff built with Staton before offering, but coaches often spend years building relationships with top recruits. BYU was Staton’s second to last offer. Staton is a winner, his high school team won the Nevada 4A State Championship last season and his BTI Elite club team won the National Championship on the Puma circuit this summer.
We caught up with Staton two weeks before his decision, see what he had to say then.
AJ Goes Home
BYU coaches were on hand Tuesday as Utah Prep and A.J. Dybansta (6’9” Brockton, MA, Utah Prep) played in Dybansta’s home state of Massachusetts. The matchup was build as a showdown between Dybansta and the number four prospect in the ‘25 class Nate Ament, but fellow Cougar target J.J. Mandaquit (6’1” Honolulu, HI, Utah Prep) stole the show nearly earning a triple double(25 pts, 9 rebs, 9 asts) in the Utah Prep 79-71 win.
